The word orthodontics, which consists of the Latin words “orthos” (smooth) and “odontos” (teeth), means straight teeth. As a branch of science, it aims to harmonize not only the teeth but also the jaw and facial bones with each other and to correct these bones. While the growth and development of the maxillofacial bones continues, the correction by using extra-oral intraoral devices is called “functional orthopedic treatment” (FOT).
The mismatch between the jawbones is corrected by orthognathic surgery (double or single jaw surgery + orthodontic treatment) in adults who are in the late period of growth development or have completed this period, so that FOT (Growth Development Direction Therapy) cannot be applied. If the incompatibility between the jaws is not severe, the incompatibility can be corrected by pulling teeth and only interfering with the teeth. These treatments, which aim to straighten the teeth without interfering with the mismatch between the jaws, are called “camouflage treatment” or “reconciliation treatment”.
