iTero 5D Element

Itero element is a three-dimensional scanner and is the most equipped member of the Itero family of Align Technology ( Invisalign ), which belongs to the world’s largest 3D scanning engraving company. The 5D element differs from other family members in that it is 20 times faster and has a clearer image thanks to its UHD camera and infrared technology.

Scanning with 3D scanners is noninvasive compared to the measurement process in classical measurement techniques. Thus, it does not affect the patient’s breathing, retching, taste and smell senses, and there is no measuring piece that can remain in the patient’s mouth. Therefore, it is a cleaner, easier and more comfortable method than classical measurement systems.

3D jaw models of our patients are saved in .stl file by means of this camera, which takes 6-8 thousand photos per second in a short time like 10 minutes. The resulting 3D image can be opened either on the screen of Itero or on tablets or computers (as it is transferred to the cloud system) at myitero.com. If the patient will be treated with invisalign, with the help of an algorithm obtained as a result of the treatment of 11 million individuals from the “outcome simulator” option, it is shown how the teeth will be seen as a result of the immediate treatment with an accuracy of 60%. With this result, the physician can change (tooth positions) as desired with the patient and share the favorite result with Invisalign’s technicians. Jaw models obtained in 3D can be examined 360 degrees as single or double, as well as single chin or double chin occlusal contacts (tooth contacts). Drawings can be made on the screen view taken from desired angles, notes can be taken and these images can be presented to the patient as a printout. Thus, patients have the opportunity to perceive their treatment better.

Two scans are made before and after the preparation with a 3D scanner on the teeth to be prosthetic. While the dimensional stability (shrinkage) of the impression material, hard plaster, wax modeling, investment and metal materials used sequentially in a prosthesis made with the classical method is very high, scanning accuracy with a scanner is a very sensitive measurement like 30 microns. There are scientific studies that report that it is more sensitive than other scanners with this value. Since the prostheses obtained with the 5D element are more compatible with the dental tissue, patients can use these prostheses for a longer time.

Today, it has been stated that only a dental examination with a mirror and a probe is not sufficient to detect the interface caries, which are the most common and usually cause cavities in the two adjacent teeth (There are scientific publications reporting that 1/3 of the interface caries cannot be detected in this way). The superposition of these caries on panoramic x-rays also makes it difficult to detect. Therefore, bitewing x-ray has been reported as the most reliable method for caries detection. This means 8-10 graphs for an individual who has all his teeth in his mouth in one examination. Since the risk of new caries formation is at least 6 months, physician control is recommended every 6 months. Receiving 8-10 doses of radiation every 6 months is unethical with long-term effects on the patient, while the 5D element has infrared technology. Thanks to this technology, patients can have caries detected without being exposed to radiation. It is the most reliable caries detection method in pregnant women, children, tumor cases, especially in the head and neck region, and in all healthy individuals.
