      Extraction of Abscessed Teeth

Bacteria formed in the mouth can reach the root of the teeth. These bacteria can cause an infection at the root of the tooth. This condition is known as gingivitis. Inflammation of the tooth root can develop due to the patient’s gum disease, dental caries, or a previous failure of root canal treatment. In addition, the patient’s lack of attention to oral hygiene, unhealthy diet, fillings with impaired harmony of the edges, food residues accumulated between the teeth, weakening of the patient’s immunity, poor habits such as smoking are effective factors in the formation of bacteria in the mouth.
If the inflamed tooth causes swelling in the patient’s face, symptoms such as fever and weakness may occur in the body. In the presence of acute inflammation, the doctor will drain the inflammation if possible. Acute infection is suppressed with antibiotics prescribed to the patient. Two different treatment methods can be applied to the patient after an acute infection.

      • If the loss of substance in the teeth and surrounding tissues is not excessive, a root canal treatment.
      • If the loss of substance in the teeth and surrounding tissues is significant, dental extraction.

What to Do After Tooth Extraction

      • Bleeding within the first 24 hours after surgical tooth extraction is considered normal. In case of bleeding, it must be pricked for 30 minutes with a sterile tampon given by the dentist.
      • Vigorous rinsing of the mouth, sucking and spitting should be avoided. Both of these conditions can prevent the bleeding from stopping.
      • If there are stitches in the area of the extracted tooth, it is recommended not to brush the bitten area on the first day.
      • Bad mouth odor is considered normal in the first few days after surgical tooth extraction. However, the patient is recommended to perform daily oral care from the day after the operation.
      • After intraoral surgery, smoking should be avoided for at least 2 days and alcohol consumption is not recommended until drug treatment is completed. The use of tobacco and tobacco products has adverse effects on wound healing.

      • Ice therapy is applied after the surgery as swelling and bruising may occur in the area of the procedure.
      • It is very important to take the medicines prescribed by the doctor, in the indicated dose and on the day.
      • In the first week after surgery, only liquid foods should be used. Extremely hot foods and drinks should not be consumed.
      • It is recommended to sleep with double pillows and keep your head elevated at night after surgery.

      FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What Happens If The Abscessed Tooth Is Extracted?

It should be noted that in acutely inflamed teeth, it is not possible to extract the tooth. If an inflamed tooth is extracted, it is possible for an infection to enter the bloodstream.

What happens if the dental abscess is not treated?

If the abscess area is left untreated, if the abscess presses on the nerve, it causes numbness in the person’s chin. It can damage the bone by affecting the jawbone and the nerve. If there are gaps between the teeth and dental care is not performed regularly, the food residue accumulated between the teeth causes the formation of gum problems.

How Many Days Does Pain Last After Tooth Extraction?

For a simple tooth extraction, the pain can last from one to three days. Particularly sensitive patients may experience pain or tenderness in the area for a longer time – perhaps up to a week.

What happens if the tooth abscess progresses?

If a tooth abscess is left untreated, infections in the lower teeth can progress to the heart and infections in the upper teeth can reach the brain. The infection can spread to the head and neck, in the worst case it can spread to the whole body, causing life-threatening sepsis (blood poisoning).

How Long Does It Take For An Abscess To Pass?

For a definitive solution and treatment, people should consult a dentist. After the regular use of antibiotics in the abscessed area, the gum infection is cleared within a week on average. The necessary treatment is then applied.
